Save Food (Classes VII – VIII)

Global food waste is a far-reaching problem with tremendous financial, ethical and environmental costs specially in light of the fact that millions of humans go hungry everyday. “Food waste” refers to items that are fit for human consumption but thrown away, often at supermarkets, restaurants, parties, weddings and even at home by consumers or wasted because of improper storage methods. This project aims at building consciousness in the students about this global problem where so much food goes wasted while many die of starvation.

SHOWING PRESENTATIONS ABOUT UN SUSTAINABLE GOALS

As part of British Council ISA project ’ Save Food Share Food Share Joy’, a PowerPoint presentation showcasing the Sustainable Development Goals- Zero Hunger and Good Health and Well Being was shown to the students. The main aim of this presentation was to make the students aware about the reasons and problems associated with the SDG goals. Students also discussed the possible solutions for achieving these goals.

SHOWING PRESENTATIONS ABOUT FOOD WASTAGE

As a part of British Council ISA Project “Save Food, Share Food, Share Joy”, students of Classes VII and VIII were shown videos highlighting the global problem of food wastage, depicting the plight of people fighting hunger whereas one-third of world’s food produced for consumption is thrown away annually. They were also shown videos on how spoilt food could be used to produce biogas and initiative of NGO “Better India” which collects leftover food from marriages and parties and distributes it to shelter homes. They were also shown videos about the callous attitude of people regarding throwing of edible food in the dustbins.

LEARNING ABOUT PARTNER COUNTRY

As a part of ISA  project” Save Food, Share Food, Share Joy”, students of Classes VII and VIII made presentations highlighting the culture, costumes and food of India and partner countries Nepal and South Korea. Later a PowerPoint presentation session was done in classes also. The presentations not only provided valuable information about food wastage problem in these countries but also enhanced speaking skills of students.

SOFT BOARD DECORATION

Exploring the growing problem of food wastage under the ISA Project “Save Food, Share Food, Share Joy”, students of Classes VII and VIII presented various facts and solutions on preventing and reducing food wastage. Various charts depicting the reasons and consequences of food wastage, steps to prevent food wastage, aim of World Food Day and Food Banks and a lot more, were displayed on the soft boards of Classes VII and VIII. Students also showed their creativity by displaying posters highlighting the joy in sharing the food with others.

POSTER MAKING AND SLOGAN WRITING 

As part of British Council ISA project ’ Save Food Share Food Share Joy’, a Poster making & Slogan writing competition was organized for students of Classes VII & VIII . Around 30 students participated in the competition. Through this competition the students painted their perception on paper about saving food. This was not all, they also wrote creative slogans to address the message clearly.

LOVE YOUR LEFT OVERS

Food waste is a growing global issue with a third of all of the world’s food finds its way to the bin. To reduce the food wastage and reuse the leftover food, an activity “Love Your Leftover Food” was organised for students of Classes VII and VIII under the British council ISA Project “Save Food, Share Food, Share Joy”. Students participated in this activity with great fervor and presented
creative ideas for turning the leftovers into another meal. Various mouth-watering dishes were presented along with their ingredients and recipes which were highly appreciated by the guests.

NUKKAD  NATAK

Food Wastage is a huge problem that all the countries of the world are facing.With a view to raise awareness about this serious economic and environmental issue, the students of Classes VII and VIII staged a NukkadNatak in the school assembly. They highlighted the importance of sharing food with the needy ones instead of throwing it into the bins. The role of NGO’s working in this regard and use of food ATM’s were also depicted through the play.

RALLY ON SAVE FOOD, SHARE FOOD AND SHARE JOY

Students of classes VII and VIII carried out an awareness rally as a part of  ISA Activity “Save Food, Share Food, Share Joy”  to spread the message to avoid food wastage.

Holding placards that read ‘Food waste, not in good taste’, ‘Waste Less, Feed More”, students marched through the school premises and the streets. The rally culminated at the market place.

TALK  AND  POEM  RECITATION 

Students of Classes VII and VIII participated in ‘Talk & Poem Recitation ‘activity as a part of their ISA project ‘Save Food,ShareFood,Share Joy”. Students enthusiastically participated in this two-day activity and showed their latent talent and verbal skills. Their performance was applauded by one and all.

VISIT TO V3S MALL TO SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT FOOD WASTAGE

Daily millions of people across the globe leave a lot of food uneaten in their plates, which is just thrown into the dustbin.On the other hand, millions of human beings elsewhere go to bed with half-full or empty stomachs. To spread the message to stop food wastage, students of Classes VII and VIII visited the V3S Mall, Laxmi Nagar. A Nukakd Natak was staged in V3S to make the general public aware of the ill effects of food wastage. A rally was also conducted to sensitize the citizens about sharing food. The audience appreciated the students and supported the cause by signing a pledge top share food with others.

SURVEY AND PANEL DISCUSSION

As a part of ISA project “Save Food, Share Food, Share Joy”, students of Classes VII- VIII visited restaurants, grocery stores, food joints and households to survey how much food is wasted every day/month and steps taken to minimize food wastage. Later, the students analyzed the results and displayed them through charts and magazines. Later, aPanel discussion activity was also organized where the students shared their perspectives with the audience.

Questionnaire activity was conducted for  Classes VII and VIII under ISA Project  “Save Food, Share Food, Share Joy”, to evaluate the level of understanding and consciousness of students with regards to global problem of food wastage .

GRAND FINALE

Food waste or food loss is food that is wasted, lost or uneaten.This not only deprives many across the globe with onetime meal but alsocontributes to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental issues. In the Finale of the ISA Project, “Save Food, Share Food, Share Joy”, students of Classes VII and VIII participated with great zeal to create awareness to reduce food wastage.  All the soft boards of the event area were decorated withbeautiful slogans, posters and data analysis charts.Our little chefs presented a number mouth watering dishesusing leftover food. They also displayed their survey reports of restaurants, grocery stores, community kitchens through albums. The students also urged the guests to support the cause by signing pledge. The efforts of the students were applauded by everyone.
